Google will retain at least two Area 120 research and development (R&D) projects despite the impact that its recent mass layoffs have had on its R&D group.
Area 120 is an entrepreneurial and creative environment where Google team members collaborate on new, innovative ideas.
- Two Area 120 projects that Google has kept include the Aloud video dubbing solution, and Checks, an AI-powered privacy compliance solution for mobile apps.
- Area
120 has been the brain behind several innovative solutions, including
Tables, a work-tracking tool that joined Google Cloud, and the AdLingo
AI-powered ads platform, which also became a cloud product.
- Despite
these successes, Google is shifting its focus away from Area 120 and
has opted to dedicate more time and resources to projects that "build on
Google's deep investment in AI."
- In Sept. 2022, Google called off seven Area 120 projects and instructed employees to find new roles within the company.
