Microsoft is moving forward with a $10B investment in OpenAI, which was speculated late last year.

The $10B investment comes after a previous $1B investment made in 2019 and an undisclosed investment in 2021.

  • OpenAI is making a deal with Microsoft as it requests a significant amount of cloud-computing power to process the data to train AIs. Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are the three leaders in this space, and both Amazon and Google have their own OpenAI competitors being built internally.
  • The details of the investment were not disclosed, but the funding will be released in tranches and will not be a one-time payment. Past investments have been partially paid with credits on the Azure network.
  • As part of the deal, OpenAI announced that Azure would continue to be the exclusive cloud computing service.
  • Microsoft will also exclusively use OpenAIs features for many commercial needs and integrate them into their Bing search engine and Office suite.
