A sixth police officer involved in the death of Tyre Nichols has been fired from the Memphis Police Department.

An internal investigation showed that the officer had violated several misconduct policies.

  • The officer, identified as Preston Hemphill, had been serving in the Memphis police since 2018.
  • The MPD suspended Hemphill before eventually firing him for his role in Nichols' death. This decision was not made public until yesterday.
  • The MPD stated that Hemphill had broken several rules regarding the deployment of a stun gun, personal conduct, and truthfulness.
  • Hemphill's legal defense team said it does not agree with the decision and will continue to cooperate with authorities regarding the case.
  • The death of Nichols, a Black man, made headlines last week as a video released by the city of Memphis showed Nichols running away after being tased and then being brutally beaten by five police officers, who were also Black.
    • Nichols died of his injuries a few days later at a hospital.
  • All five police officers have been relieved of duty.

  • Nichols' funeral was attended by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Rev. Al Sharpton. The latter called on Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
  • The bill passed the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives in 2021 but failed to pass the Senate vote that had a Republican majority.
  • Negotiations between Republican and Democratic senators on a policing reform bill failed shortly after, and no progress has been made since then.
