A Syrian infant born in the rubble of a house destroyed by last week's earthquake is in good health.

The baby, named Aya, was found by rescue workers in the northern Syrian town of Jinderis over 10 hours after the earthquake hit the region on Feb. 6.

  • Aya was born in the aftermath of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that devastated Turkey and Syria last week.
  • Her mother, father, and four siblings died in the rubble where rescue workers found her.
  • Doctors at the Cihan Hospital in the city of Afrin said she is healthy enough to leave by next week, her great-uncle said.
  • Aya is no longer receiving medication and is being breastfed by the wife of the hospital's director.
  • Aya will be raised by her paternal aunt, who recently gave birth.
