According to the Globe and Mail, prospective renters falsify information in Canada's Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Rentals.ca predicted a 5% increase for the region in 2023, following a 10.9% increase last year.
- Renters are producing counterfeit documents and fudging documents to enter a competitive market.
- Prospective renters are doctoring legitimate employment letters to show higher income, adding fake information to their LinkedIn profiles, and asking friends to pose as previous landlords.
- Fake tenants also offer additional documents like pay stubs to boost their application.
