Democratic senators Cory Booker (NJ) and Brian Schatz (HI) co-published a proposal to the FDA to study the benefits of psychedelics.

The proposal represents another strep in the increasingly popular idea of legalizing research into the use of psychedelic drugs such as MDMA and 'magic mushrooms' for therapeutic purposes.

  • In 2012, the FDA drafted a guideline called “Breakthrough Therapy Designation” (BTD).
  • This rulebook was designed to assist researchers in studying and administering trials for illegal drugs that could be used for therapeutics.
  • Navy veteran and Rep. Dan Crenshaw (TX) is also a proponent of using psychedelics for mental health benefits and supported MDMA research in 2021.
