German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom (DT), in collaboration with Google Cloud and Ericsson, has successfully launched a 5G cloud-native proof-of-concept (PoC) pilot.
The long-term goal of this PoC is to incorporate cloud technology in mobile and connected devices at the outer edge of the network.
The pilot was conducted in a DT lab in Austria, and the three companies were able to deploy cloud and 5G core applications in just minutes.
- The collaboration leverages the automation capabilities of GDC Edge, and Ericsson’s 5G core cloud-native network functions for greater speed, scalability, flexibility, and reliability.
- DT said that it was able to deploy cloud infrastructure and 5G core applications in a few hours as opposed to the several weeks needed to do so with traditional cloud platforms.
- To roll out these new services on a large scale, all three companies must show how they will adhere to EU data protection and security standards. A recent DT media release states that the next phase of the pilot will be dedicated to establishing strategies to maintain these security standards.
