Marijuana use by teenagers has declined since the COVID-19 pandemic.

In contrast, adult use of cannabis products, including alcohol, has either remained the same or increased.

  • When comparing the data for drug and tobacco use in 2020 compared to 2018 and 2019, the data indicates that:
    • Cannabis use among teenagers ages 13 and 15 dropped by 3.4%.
    • Tobacco use declined by about 4 points, and use of other illegal drugs dropped 2.5%.
    • Cannabis use in teens ages 16 and 17 dropped 7.3%.
    • Tobacco use dropped by 10%. Meanwhile, the use of other drugs declined by 3%.
  • One reason for the decline is teenagers having less access to their social circles and being 'stuck inside' with less access to drugs.
