At least three people were killed and five injured after a gunman opened fire at Michigan State University (MSU) on Monday night.

The 43-year-old suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have yet to establish a motive, according to police.

  • The suspect opened fire at 8:18 p.m. ET at the university's main campus in the city of East Lansing, Michigan.
  • Two victims were found at Berkey Hall on the campus's north side.
  • A third victim was discovered at the adjacent Michigan State University Union building.
  • Injured victims were taken by ambulance to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, where some were listed as being in critical condition.
  • A shelter-in-place order was lifted after the suspect was found dead off-campus from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

  • The U.S. had 647 shootings with four or more victims in 2022, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization that tracks shootings.
