Netflix is expanding its password-sharing crackdown to Canada, Portugal, Spain, and New Zealand.

The streamer is requiring subscribers there to set a "primary location," such as their household, for viewing their accounts. Users then have the option to add up to two paid “sub accounts” for users outside their household.

  • Netflix said that after testing the "paid sharing" option in some Latin American countries it now plans a wider rollout over the "coming months."
  • In Canada, the cost to add a sub-account is $7.99 Canadian dollars, or about $5.95 U.S. dollars, per month. The prices in other countries range from about $4.30 to $6.45.
  • Netflix said members will still be able to watch Netflix on personal devices or on TVs away from home, though it didn't specify how that would work.
  • Users will be able to transfer their profiles to a new account, allowing them to keep their viewing history and personalized recommendations.
  • The company estimates that over 100 million households worldwide share accounts.
