New funding for venture capital firms dropped 65% YoY in Q4 2022.

The $20.6B raised by venture capital firms last quarter was the lowest fundraising total for a fourth quarter since 2013.

This was the first time since 2009 that fundraising volumes fell from the third to the fourth quarter of the year.

  • Limited partners (LPs) invested in 226 venture-capital funds in Q4, the fewest for a fourth quarter since 2012.
    • For comparison, LPs invested in 620 venture funds in Q4 2021.
  • The data was provided by venture capital data analytics firm Preqin.

Tiger Global Management, the most active investor in U.S. startups in 2021, lowered the fundraising target for its newest venture fund from $6B to $5B.

  • For its previous fund, Tiger raised $12.7B between 2021 and 2022.
