Nikki Haley officially announced that she will seek the Republican presidential nomination.
Haley,
who formerly served as South Carolina's governor and ambassador to the
United Nations, is the second Republican to launch a 2024 presidential
bid, after Donald Trump, who launched his campaign in November.
- "It’s
time for a new generation of leadership – to rediscover fiscal
responsibility, secure our border, and strengthen our country, our
pride, and our purpose," Haley said in a video announcement.
- The 51-year-old Haley is the child of two Indian immigrants to South Carolina.
- She served in the South Carolina House of Representatives between 2005 and 2011, when she become the state's first female and first nonwhite governor.
- Senator
Tim Scott (R-SC) has also been flirting with a presidential bid,
scheduling a "listening tour" that will take him through South Carolina
and Iowa — both key early-voting states in the Republican primary
cycle.
- According to a new poll, 43% of GOP voters favor Trump's candidacy. DeSantis has 31% of support, followed by former President Mike Pence with 7%, and Haley with 4%.
