On Monday, Google announced Bard, a conversational AI service that's considered a rival to ChatGPT.

Bard, an experimental AI technology, is opening to a group of "trusted testers" before a wider release to the public in the coming weeks.

  • Like ChatGPT, Bard can participate in online chats and answer questions in a conversational way.
  • Based on Google's LaMDA, or Language Model for Dialogue Applications, one of the company's large language models, Bard can reportedly draw from internet data to answer questions about current events and more.
  • In a demo, Bard answered a user's query about the James Webb Space Telescope by supplying three bulleted answers.
  • Google is using a version of LaMDA that doesn't need as much computing power, allowing it to support more users and take in feedback about the AI.
  • “Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in a blog post yesterday.
