Orphaned macaws and cockatoos

PICTURED: TWO MACAWS AT THEIR NEW HOME AT URIMBIRRA WILDLIFE PARK

Orphaned macaws and cockatoos are given a fresh start at a wildlife park in Victor Harbor, South Australia. The birds, which have a lifespan of over 80 years, can sometimes outlive their owners, creating difficulties for the families who inherit them.

Cheryl and Andy Keane, who have operated the Urimbirra Wildlife Park in Victor Harbor since the 1990s, have long been dealing with "a never-ending supply of cockies" as their owners pass away or move into retirement homes.

  • Wildlife vet Wayne Boardman said that the highly-intelligent birds need special care, adding that, "They are magnificent and a big bird to look after. They need to be able to fly."
  • The Urimbirra Wildlife Park allows other birds to visit resident birds as part of "playgroups."
  • Victor Harbor has more senior citizens than of any other town in South Australia.
