Former Vice President Mike Pence said that there will be "better choices" for GOP voters than Donald Trump in next year's Republican primary.
Pence said he would personally prefer another candidate over Trump but did not rule out supporting Trump if he became the nominee.
Pence said that an excessive focus on the past and "particularly on relitigating the last election" hurt Republican candidates in the 2022 midterm election.
- The former Indiana governor said that the ongoing fight over raising the debt ceiling — and the looming prospect of an unprecedented default by the U.S. government — provide an opportunity for the Republican majority in the House of Representatives to "start us back in the direction of fiscal discipline."
- So far, Trump and Nikki Haley are the only two GOP politicians who have announced presidential runs.
- When asked if he plans to run for president, he said, "I'll keep you posted."
