Scandinavian streamer Viaplay launched in the US this week and comes to Canada on March 7. The service currently has around 7.3 million subscribers around the globe; 37% of them, roughly 2.7 million, are located outside of the Nordic countries.
- Viaplay largely built its international audience on the global success of "Nordic Noir" shows, but hopes to expand its line-up in the future.
- A number of Nordic shows, including some produced by Viaplay, have streamed in the US; the AMC+ and Sundance streaming platforms frequently feature Scandinavian content.
- Viaplay's 2017 climate crisis thriller "Occupied" streamed on Netflix in the US.
- According to Viaplay executive Vanda Rapti, who's overseeing the North American expansion, the platform's primary audience is "savvy people who like foreign films and series and choose to prioritize new culture experiences."
