Sony has halved its forecast for initial shipments of its VR2 headsets.
Pre-orders fell below expectations as the Japanese electronics giant prepares to release the product on Feb. 22.
- Sony
downwardly revised its forecast for shipments of the VR2 for the first
launch quarter from two million units to about one million.
- The
company told one of its suppliers to anticipate lower-than-expected
display panel orders, reports Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the
matter.
- Sony has invested less in making its VR products affordable than Meta, its leading competitor.
- Sony's original VR headset failed to secure 1% of the market dominated by Meta's Quest headset range.
- The VR industry is facing headwinds after Meta was forced to lay off staff in its hardware department, while Microsoft cut staff in its HoloLens goggle business.
- Despite headwinds, worldwide VR headset shipments are expected to grow by 31.5% this year, according to market intelligence firm IDC.
