Tesla employees in New York announced plans to form a union.
No Tesla factories or workplaces are currently unionized.
- Workers at the Tesla plant in Buffalo, New York will decide whether to hold a vote to join the Workers United Upstate New York.
- Organizers
will need to collect employee signatures and file a petition with
the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to hold a union election.
- At least 30% of workers must sign the petition for the vote to take place.
- Tesla
CEO Elon Musk has been critical of unions. In 2018, he tweeted that
employees would lose their Tesla stock options if they formed a union —
the NLRB ordered him to delete the tweet.
- Other major U.S. automakers like Ford and GM have long worked with unionized workforces.
- A report by the progressive Economic Policy Institute found that more than 200,000 workers joined labor unions in the U.S. from 2021 to 2022.
