The European Union's competition regulator is reviewing Google's proposed acquisition of math and education app Photomath

The regulator can choose to open an investigation into the deal or allow it to move forward; it plans to issue a decision by March 28.

  • Photomath's app can scan and quickly solve math problems using artificial intelligence technology.
  • This week, Google confirmed that it signed an agreement to acquire Photomath in May 2022.
  • The tech giant said that Photomath's tech will improve its "ability to provide better math learning experiences to students, helping to build out Google's homework help offerings for users."
  • Photomath, with offices in California and Croatia, said in 2021 that it had amassed over 220 million downloads.
  • The startup has raised at least $29M from investors such as Menlo Ventures, LearnCapital, Goodwater Capital, and GSV Ventures.
