The Finnish National Opera and Ballet (FNOB)

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet (FNOB) partnered with XR/VR tech firm Varjo to become the first opera house to use immersive technology to produce a full-scale opera.

FNOB worked with Helsinki-based Varjo to build a digital twin of the performance hall.

FNOB estimates that the digital twin saved 20% of budgeted labor costs, 1,500 hours of work, and €75,000 (~$80,000) of budget.

  • The opera company used Varjo Aero VR headsets and the "XR Stage" tool to stage the "Turandot," an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini.
    • The "XR Stage" tool, developed by Unreal Engine, allows the team to work in real time on the set as if they were physically there.
  • Puccini's "Turandot" opera VR production can be streamed for free here.
