Microsoft limits Bing chat sessions

Microsoft said it will cap conversations with the Bing chatbot to five chat turns per session and 50 questions per day.

The new limits come after Microsoft acknowledged that longer chats involving 15 or more questions cause the bot to "become repetitive" or deliver responses that may not be helpful or "in line with our designed tone."

  • Some users of the new GPT-powered Bing chatbot have described feeling unsettled after their conversations.
  • For example, it recently told Associated Press journalist Matt O'Brien that he was "one of the most evil and worst people in history" and compared him to Adolf Hitler.
  • In a blog post, Microsoft said its data shows that most users find the answer they need from the bot within five turns.
  • Additionally, less than 1% of chat conversations involved 50 or more messages.
  • As a result, the company will limit the chats, at least for now, as it gains more feedback.
  • After a chat session reaches five turns, users will be prompted to begin another topic. Ending each chat session clears the context to the AI model doesn't get "confused," the company noted.
