OpenAI CEO says AI regulation 'critical'

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says a world deeply ingrained with AI will probably "happen pretty quickly," with tools that can make people more productive, smarter, healthier, and more entertained.

Despite the upsides, Altman acknowledged that serious challenges will come with AI adoption and "regulation will be critical" moving forward,

Altman shared the thoughts in a thread posted on Twitter over the weekend.

  • The CEO and former Y Combinator president said he believes the transition to more AI integration will be "most good" and potentially occur quickly, comparing the transition to the worldwide adoption of smartphones.
  • While it's tempting to move forward rapidly, "society needs time to adapt to something so big," he wrote of AI.
  • Challenges include bias and people's concerns about feeling "unsettled" after communicating with a chatbot. He used the example of OpenAI's ChatGPT, which by default should not be for or against any political ideologies, he noted.
  • OpenAI thinks demonstrating AI tools to people should come early, even if they're still "somewhat broken," so there can be enough input and efforts made to "get it right," he said.
  • In the meantime, regulators will need time to figure out how to address AI's flaws.
  • Although today's current-generation AI tools are not too scary, "I think we are potentially not that far away from potentially scary ones," he wrote.
