AN ARTIST'S RENDITION OF A LARGE GAS GIANT PLANET (FOREGROUND) ORBITING A SMALL RED DWARF STAR CALLED TOI 5205.
Astronomers have discovered a giant planet orbiting a small star about 280 light-years from Earth, calling it the "forbidden planet."
Planet TOI 5205b, roughly the size of Jupiter, was located using NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).
Scientists plan to observe the planet using the James Webb Space Telescope, which could detect if it has an atmosphere.
- The planet's host star, TOI-5205, is only about four times the size of Jupiter and is 40% the size of the sun.
- TOI 5205b is the first gas giant planet to be discovered near a low-mass M dwarf star.
- The new discovery is reportedly challenging planet formation theories
- A study detailing the findings was published Tuesday in The Astronomical Journal.
