Uber has opted to migrate all of its IT from data centers to the cloud.
The San Francisco-based ride-hailing and food-delivery giant recently signed multi-year agreements with Google Cloud and Oracle.
- Uber has signed two seven-year cloud deals of an undisclosed value with Google Cloud and Oracle and aims to complete its full cloud migration over the next few years.
- According to Uber’s senior director of technology, Kamran Zargahi, over 95% of the company’s IT is stored in its data centers.
- Supply-chain issues brought on by COVID-19 made it more difficult for companies to obtain the IT hardware needed to support their in-house data centers. Hardware deliveries were pushed back by more than 12 months, thus forcing companies to use a cloud provider, which reduces reliance on the hardware supply chain.
- Zargahi expects that Uber will be able to cut costs long-term by moving to the cloud.
