U.S. e-commerce sales up 5.7% in Jan

E-commerce sales rose by 5.7% in January, according to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The data showed a wider rise in retail sales across the U.S. market as consumers continue to shrug off inflationary pressures.

  • U.S. e-commerce sales rose 5.7% YoY in January, while retail sales grew 4.7% overall.
  • Department store sales were up 3.1%, apparel 6.6%, and home goods were up 4.5%.
  • Sporting goods were also up 6.9% YoY, while electronics sales were down 6.5%.
  • The continued strength of retail sales shows that U.S. consumers are continuing to spend despite inflationary pressures, according to Claire Tassin, retail and e-commerce analyst at Morning Consult.
