Local officials built a scaffolding platform that will be open to a small number of visitors at a time during the six-year restoration of the vault.

  • Samuele Caciagli, the architect leading the restoration, said that the scaffolding tours, which start on Feb. 24, are "a unique opportunity that is unlikely to be repeated in the coming decades."
  • The ceiling mosaics, which were painted in the 13th century, show scenes of The Last Judgement and John the Baptist.
  • They feature ~10 million pieces of stone and glass across 1,000 square meters.
  • The Baptistry of San Giovanni is near the world-famous Duomo in Florence.
