Democrats took control of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the first time in 12 years.

Democrats won three special elections on Tuesday, giving them a single-seat lead in House.

  • Democrat Tony DeLuca, who was the longest-serving member of the Pennsylvania House, won re-election in November despite dying of lymphoma in October.
  • He will be replaced by former Allegheny County Democratic Committee executive director Joe McAndrew, who beat a Republican pastor.
  • The two other special elections were held to replace Democratic House members Summer Lee and Austin Davis.
    • Lee became the first Black woman elected to represent Pennsylvania in Congress in November, and Davis was elected as Pennsylvania lieutenant governor.
  • The GOP still controls the Senate but will no longer be able to override a veto from Democratic governor Josh Shapiro.

  • Pennsylvania Republicans have been pushing for stricter voter ID laws and abortion restrictions.
