Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told employees on Monday to expect another round of job cuts.
The e-commerce giant aims to shed 9,000 workers in addition to the 18,000 staff members it already laid off in recent months.
- Amazon's first round of layoffs targeted employees in the company's least profitable divisions, including its Alexa voice assistant and devices groups.
- The new round of job cuts will target divisions that were overlooked in the earlier round, including the company's highly profitable cloud computing business Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- Amazon's advertising operations are also expected to be hit particularly hard by the upcoming layoffs.
- Jassy noted that executives agreed at the company's annual planning session to continue focusing on reducing Amazon's staff headcount.
- Several large tech firms have laid off staff as the U.S. tech industry continues to face its most severe contraction since the dot-com bust in the early 2000s.
