Adidas clashes with BLM over trademark

Adidas initially opposed the recent trademark filing by Black Lives Matter for a logo featuring three yellow stripes.

The sportswear giant claimed that the yellow-stripe design used by Black Lives Matter could create confusion with its own brand.

  • However, Adidas has now decided to withdraw its opposition and drop its legal challenge against the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation's trademark application.
  • The reversal of its decision was driven by the concern that the opposition could be interpreted as criticism of Black Lives Matter's mission.
  • The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation is a significant entity in the decentralized Black Lives Matter movement. The foundation had applied for a federal trademark for its yellow three-stripe design in Nov. 2020.
  • The design would be used on various products, including clothing, publications, bags, bracelets, and mugs.
