AI tools such as ChatGPT are expected to impact at least 80% of the U.S. workforce, according to a study by OpenAI researchers.

The study estimates that nearly 20% of U.S. workers could see half or more of their tasks automated through GPT tools. Higher-income jobs may face greater exposure to AI automation than lower-paying ones, according to the study.

  • Jobs requiring programming and writing skills are more susceptible to AI than jobs that rely heavily on scientific and critical thinking skills, according to the findings.
  • Researchers estimate that around 80% of the U.S. labor force will have at least 10% of their job tasks impacted by the rollout of GPTs or Generative Pre-trained Transformers.
  • The study specifically looked at the potential "exposure" of a job's work tasks to AI or whether a GPT tool could cut the time it takes for the worker to do a task in half or more.
  • The occupations found to have "100% exposure" to GPT were mathematicians, tax preparers, writers and authors, web and digital interface designers, and financial quantitative analysts.
  • Researchers from OpenAI, OpenResearch, and the University of Pennsylvania used ChatGPT 4 to come up with the estimates.
