Amazon HR chief rejects worker petition

Amazon's top HR executive, Beth Galetti, rejected a petition signed by 30,000 Amazon employees.

The rejection came in the form of an internal message to the petition's organizers, which was subsequently leaked to Insider.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy released a memo on Feb. 17 informing workers that they will be required to return to the office for at least three days a week from May 1.

  • A group of workers formed a "Remote Advocacy" Slack channel shortly after the announcement to express their opposition to the decision.
  • The same group drafted a petition against the return-to-work policy that attracted signatures from 30,000 employees.
  • Employees on the Slack channel responded to Galetti's rejection with frustration, with one writing, "I realize Beth can't respond to every accommodation request, but I don't think this is representative of the vision she describes and the disconnect is painful."
  • The rejection came shortly after Amazon announced plans cut a further 9,000 jobs in addition to the job cuts in January that saw 18,000 employees laid off.
