Amazon's drone delivery project is struggling to make progress, CNBC reports.
The e-commerce giant continues to face regulatory hurdles and lackluster demand for its air delivery service.
Amazon founder and former CEO Jeff Bezos said in 2013 that he expected Amazon to be delivering products by aerial drone within a decade.
- Since then, Amazon Prime Air has faced drone crashes and a high staff turnover.
- The company still needs to perform hundreds of hours of flight time without any safety incidents to gain regulatory approval for commercial deliveries on a larger scale.
- Amazon spokesperson Maria Boschetti said the setbacks hadn't altered the company's long-term plans to roll out its air delivery service.
- "We're as excited about it now as we were 10 years ago — but hard things can take time; this is a highly regulated industry," said Boschetti.
