Apple acquires AI video compression startup

Pope Francis said AI's potential to contribute positively to humanity would only occur if there is "a constant and consistent commitment" by developers to behave responsibly and ethically and responsibly.

The Pope delivered the remarks during the "Minerva Dialogues" meeting at the Vatican on Monday.

Francis told attendees that he is convinced that AI/ML's development has the "potential to contribute in a positive way to the future of humanity."

  • However, its potential can only be realized if those developing AI are committed to ethical and responsible behaviors, he said.
  • "It is reassuring to know that many people in these fields are working to ensure that technology remains human-centered, ethically grounded, and directed toward the good."
  • Francis also warned that people should maintain caution regarding data-processing algorithms that purport to measure "an individual's makeup and prior behavior. "
  • "We cannot allow algorithms to limit or condition respect for human dignity," the Pope said, "Or to exclude compassion, mercy, forgiveness, and above all, the hope that people are able to change."

Meanwhile, an AI-generated image of the Pope wearing a white puffy jacket has gone viral online.

  • The fake image was reportedly created using Midjourney, which recently released an updated version of its AI text-to-image generator.
