Apple may use its own in-house 5G modem chips in the 2024 iPhone 16 series, according to Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon.
Qualcomm has supplied 5G modems for the 2022 iPhone 14 models and other
Apple devices. However, reports have noted that Apple is looking to
replace Qualcomm's modems with its own homegrown chip.
- The move would further Apple's goal to control much of the technology inside iPhones and other devices.
- Amon told the WSJ that Qualcomm expects Apple to "do their own modem in 2024."
- Qualcomm is not currently making plans to supply the 5G modem chip to Apple in 2024, he confirmed to CNBC, though that is Apple's "decision to make."
- Apple acquired the majority of Intel’s modem business in 2019.
- Prior
reports said Apple planned to test and refine its first in-house 5G
modem chip in the 2024 iPhone SE 4, which has since been canceled.
- It could instead add the chip to the 2024 iPhone 16 series and later models.
