Facebook parent Meta Platforms could release its first fully functioning augmented reality glasses in 2027, according to The Verge.
The device was included in a roadmap presentation this week about Meta's future advancements in AR and VR.
- The 2027 smart glasses would be capable of projecting "avatars through holograms in the real world."
- While
Meta plans to launch other AR glasses before 2027, that year's device
would be more advanced and fully functioning, potentially having more of
an impact on the industry.
- CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said such a device would be Meta's "iPhone moment."
- Meta
would start internally testing the wearable in 2024 and release it
publicly in 2027 as part of a future "Innovation" line of AR glasses.
- The roadmap laid out Meta's plans for other AR and VR devices.
- For example, the company plans to launch an updated version of the RayBan Stories smart glasses this fall.
- Its Quest 3 headset, which will be much thinner and more powerful than the Quest 2, is due out later this year.
- In 2024, Meta plans to release a more affordable VR headset, codenamed “Ventura."
