U.S.-based Delta Air Lines has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to switch to hybrid cloud architecture.
The commercial airline has also selected Kyndryl to provide its mainframe systems.
- Delta
plans to move “hundreds of applications” to the AWS cloud but is opting
to keep some of its workloads on mainframe systems, including travel
reservation systems and crew scheduling systems, which must be running
at all times.
- The
airline began its cloud migration journey with AWS two years ago but
made little progress due to COVID-19 restrictions that mostly shut down
travel.
- Earlier
this year, Delta debuted a cloud application dubbed the WiFi
portal that allows passengers to run connected applications on their
personal devices while in flight without additional charges. The airline
created the WiFi portal in collaboration with T-mobile.
- Delta
says it has incorporated Amazon cloud technology, including Amazon
Connect, an omnichannel customer service center, to automate customer
service tasks. The airline plans to explore other AWS offerings to
enable more automation capabilities.
