Firefox organization Mozilla is launching a startup to build an open-source and "trustworthy" AI ecosystem.
The Mozilla Foundation is making an initial $30M seed investment into the startup Mozilla.ai, which has a vision to "make it easy to develop trustworthy AI products," according to Mozilla executive president Mark Surman.
Surman, a Mozilla.ai board member, described the AI startup further in a blog post today.
- He wrote that the company's vision is focused on AI outside of Big Tech and academia, with "agency, accountability, transparency, and openness at its core."
- Describing it as a "real counterweight to the status quo," he believes the startup will bring together founders, developers, and more to build an "independent, decentralized, and trustworthy AI ecosystem."
- Its initial focus will be on making generative AI tools that are safer and more open, as well as human-centric recommendation systems that do not "misinform or undermine our well-being."
Mozilla.ai will be led by Moez Draief, Mozilla's managing director and former head of AI Foundations at Huawei.
- The AI startup is a subsidiary of the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, the same as Firefox developer Mozilla Corporation and Mozilla Ventures, its VC fund.
