Former Google China president Kai-Fu Lee is building Project AI 2.0, an AI company that will develop ChatGPT-style apps and AI productivity tools.

Lee, an AI expert and venture capitalist, is the founder of Sinovation Ventures, a China-based early-stage investment firm.

AI 2.0 will build upon today's current AI chatbots and tools. As AI has moved from version 1.0 to 2.0, the company will build AI platforms and productivity applications for the new era.

  • Lee said the venture is "not only a Chinese version of ChatGPT."
  • AI 2.0 will likely be "the most significant enabling technology to boost social productivity in the 21st century," Lee said.
  • The new company is currently seeking global AI talent in areas such as natural language processing, multimodality, and distributed computing.

This will be the seventh venture-built company from Sinovation Ventures.

  • The VC firm also invested in Chinese AI solutions startup Qingdao AInnovation, which went public in Hong Kong last year.
  • Lee, who oversaw Google's operations in China from 2005 to 2009, was co-author of the book "AI 2041: Ten Visions for Our Future."
