Israel's Attorney-General has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
of breaking the law
over his efforts to promote a controversial judicial reform.
Netanyahu has been barred from actively participating in the reform process because he is currently
on trial
for corruption.
Justice minister Yariv Levin is leading an effort to pass a bill that critics say would weaken the judiciary and empower Netanyahu's right-wing government.
-
Netanyahu said on Thursday that he would do "
anything it takes
" to promote the bill.
-
Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara said that Netanyahu broke the law when he made this statement and that any action the prime minister might take to promote the reform would be
illegal.
-
On Thursday, the Israeli Knesset passed a law to
limit the conditions
under which a prime minister can be removed from office.
Israelis have been protesting the judicial reform plans for months, and a
growing number
of military reservists said they will refuse to train or serve as a way of expressing opposition to the plans.
