Kroger boosts prepared food capabilities

Kroger subsidiary Home Chef has built a new distribution facility.

The news comes as rising inflation drives U.S. consumers away from restaurants.

Kroger's meal kit and heat-and-eat meal subsidiary Home Chef opened its largest production and distribution center last week in Baltimore.

  • The facility is expected to handle 30% of the company's total business.
  • Home Chef is well positioned to expand in the coming year as high inflation makes restaurants increasingly less appealing to consumers.
  • "Our customers are looking for more ways to stretch their budget. The gap between food at home and food away from home spending grew in the fourth quarter," said Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen during an earnings call with analysts last week.
