LA schools go on strike

Tens of thousands of Los Angeles school workers are set to start a three-day strike on Tuesday to demand a 30% pay hike.

Los Angeles teachers, who are also negotiating higher wages, have not called for a strike but would not attempt to cross the picket lines.

More than 1,000 schools serving 422,000 children could be shut down in the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest school district in the U.S.

  • Negotiations to prevent a strike are ongoing but parents have been urged to look for alternative childcare.
  • The school district has reportedly offered a 20% pay hike spread out over several years, plus a one-off 5% bonus.
  • Teachers have called for a 20% pay hike but the district has only offered annual hikes of 5%, 6%, and 3% over the next three years.
  • As many as 65,000 school workers (including bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and janitors) and teachers could join the walkout this week.

In 2019 the LA teachers' union went on strike for the first time in more than 30 years.
