Market Outlook US futures up on better than expected earnings

 






US Markets

U.S. stock futures rose slightly overnight after some companies posted strong earnings and future guidance after the closing bell. 

  • Salesforce surged 16% overnight and Okta gained nearly 15%.
  • Silvergate Capital lost over 30% after the crypto bank delayed its annual report. 
  • The current 10 Year U.S. Treasury yield is set at 4.01420%. On Wednesday the 10 Year U.S. Treasury yield topped 4% for the first time since November 2022.

Canadian Markets

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers has released new projections for oil and natural gas investment in 2023. 

  • The group predicts that the industry will see $40B in investment this year, which would represent a return to pre-pandemic levels. 
  • The projection is an 11% increase from 2022's investment levels. 
  • Fossil fuel companies plan to invest $28.5B in conventional oil and natural gas resources and $11.5B in oilsands.

European Markets

European markets fell on Wednesday as data showed that price increases continue unabated.

  • The Stoxx 600 closed down 0.7% despite climbing early in the day. 
  • Mining stocks led markets with a 2.2% increase, while utility stocks were the worst-performing, falling 2.6%. 
  • Data shows that prices rose above expectations in France and Spain while Germany's statistics agency estimated that the annual inflation rate reached 8.7% in February, unchanged from a month earlier. 
  • Manufacturing in France declined in February but rose in both Italy and Spain.

Asian Markets

Asian markets are mixed on Thursday as investors reacted to the 10-year U.S. treasury yield rising over 4%. 

  • Amazon said that Amazon Web Services will invest $6B in Malaysia by 2037. 
  • Shares of Nio lost more than 12% on Thursday in Hong Kong after the Chinese EV maker reported a loss in Q4. Nio's U.S.-listed shares fell by 6% on Wednesday. 
  • Manufacturing in South Korea decreased in January for the eighth consecutive month.

Commodities

Oil prices rose on Wednesday as data showed that supply is likely to increase. 

  • U.S. crude inventories increased by 1.2 million barrels last week. The U.S. now has a stockpile of 480.2 million barrels of crude, the highest amount since May 2021. 
  • Brent crude gained 1% on Wednesday and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose 0.8%. 
  • U.S. crude exports are rising thanks in part to lower WTI prices versus Brent crude.

The U.S. Dollar lost ground on Wednesday but performed well against other major currencies, which also fell on the day. 

  • The British Pound was down after the governor of the Bank of England suggested that the bank may have reached the end of its rate-rising cycle. 
  • The U.S. Dollar Index was down 0.43% on Wednesday. 
  • The Australian Dollar, New Zealand Dollar, and Chinese Yuan all rose against the U.S. Dollar.
