Microsoft announced plans to incorporate an AI assistant into its 365 apps, including Outlook, Word, and Powerpoint.

The company on Thursday unveiled Microsoft 365 Copilot, an upcoming tool that will help users automate some tasks in the apps.

  • Microsoft 365 will soon feature a "Copilot" text box in its apps, where users can prompt an AI assistant to do tasks like writing an email.
  • To deliver its responses, the system accesses user data, like past emails and documents, across a user's 365 accounts.
  • In Microsoft Teams, for example, Copilot can create a transcript and summarize meetings that a user can't attend.
  • Another demo showed Copilot creating a business proposal in Microsoft Word, which it then used to create its own PowerPoint presentation.
  • In PowerPoint, Copilot auto-generated a presentation about a student using photos from their OneDrive account.
  • Copilot in Excel will be able to automatically create charts and analyze sales data.
  • Microsoft said 20 of its enterprise customers are now testing Copilot, though it plans to make it available to more users "in the coming months."
