Netflix pushed back against a European proposal to make streaming providers pay for ISP network upgrades.
Co-CEO Greg Peters discussed the proposal during a speech at the Mobile
World Congress in Barcelona this week, arguing that the move would
primarily hurt the creative community and consumers.
- European
ISPs have been demanding that streamers compensate them for needed
network ugprades for years; European regulators are currently evaluating
the requests.
- According to data from Sandvine,
Netflix currently ranks as the top video traffic generator in the
world, surpassing YouTube; streaming video accounts for 65% of all
internet traffic.
- Peters also argued that, as broadband
customers already pay for the development of an ISP's network, asking
their favorite services to also pay amounts to "charging twice for the
same infrastructure."
