Walmart is laying off workers at fulfillment centers around the country.
The move comes as online shoppers continue to decrease their discretionary spending.
A company spokesperson said by email that Walmart has "adjusted staffing levels" at fulfillment centers "in select markets."
- The layoffs are expected to be in the hundreds and apply to Walmart facilities in Pedricktown, New Jersey; Fort Worth, Texas; Chino, California; Davenport, Florida; and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
- Walmart has not specified whether its workforce was reduced in a bid to shift more order fulfillment to its store locations or because e-commerce is expected to slow down.
- "Customer expectations are changing, and we are moving quickly to meet and exceed their needs," said Walmart in a statement.
