The German Wine Institute reported that the country's wine market had experienced a decrease in sales due to the rising cost of living.
Households have cut back on wine purchases, leading to a 6.5% decline in sales, while imports have only experienced a 1.2% increase in average price.
The cost of a liter of German wine has increased to €4.18, a 6.6% increase from last year.
- The price hike is due to increased packaging, glass, logistics, and personnel costs.
- The institute found domestic wines were hit the hardest, experiencing a 14% drop in quantity and an 8% decrease in sales.
- German wines now make up 44% of the market share, down from 45% in 2021, while Spanish wines gained a 2% increase in market share.
- The popularity of white wine remained the same, holding 47% of the market share, while red wine decreased from 41% to 40%, and rosé increased from 12% to 13%.
