YouTube profanity rule change

YouTube announced changes to its controversial new rules against profanity, introduced in late 2022.

The November rule change flagged any video that featured profanity within the first 15 seconds, and made it ineligible for monetization.

  • The new relaxed rules will allow monetization for videos featuring profanity within the first 7 seconds, so long as obscenities are not used frequently throughout the video.
  • The platform also plans to go back and re-review flagged videos from the last few months under the new regulations.
  • Moderate profanity is also acceptible in background music, backing tracks, or intro and outro music, so long as it's not featured throughout the video.
  • The new rules go into effect on Wednesday.
