A German third-tier football match between Zwickau and Rot-Weiss Essen was suspended at halftime on Sunday after an angry fan doused the referee in beer .
The fan was unhappy with the referee's decision to send off a Zwickau player and award a penalty to Essen before the interval.
- The Dutch football association has introduced new guidelines to stop matches immediately if an object from the crowd hits a player or match official.
- If an object is thrown from the terraces but misses, play will temporarily stop with the players sent to the dressing rooms. If it happens a second time, the match is immediately stopped.
- A Dutch league match between Groningen and NEC Nijmegen was similarly suspended on Saturday after a beaker of beer thrown from the crowd struck the assistant referee.
- The Groningen-NEC match will also be completed later behind closed doors.
