Workers at Amazon warehouses face injuries at twice the rate of comparable facilities, according to federal data.
The e-commerce giant remains a target of labor advocates as it continues adapting to slowing online sales growth and uncertain macroeconomic conditions.
- The
U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published
data showing 6.6 serious injuries for every 100 Amazon workers.
- The
reported injury rate is double that of non-Amazon warehouses, which
have an average of 3.2 serious injuries for every 100 workers.
- The Strategic Organizing Center, a union coalition, zeroed in on OSHA's data in a report released on Wednesday.
- The
report alleged that Amazon has "not made meaningful progress" on its
injury rates over the six-year period covered by the OSHA data.
- The
company disputed the report and noted that the number of incidents
requiring workers to take time off work at Amazon warehouses was below
the industry average.
