Amputee super-model Lauren Wasser has become the new face of body positivity.
Wasser,
whose legs were amputated following a life-threatening illness, is
known in the fashion world as the "girl with the golden legs."
- Wasser grew up in a family of models and worked in the industry from a young age.
- She was diagnosed with toxic shock syndrome (TSS) at 24, which caused her life-threatening infections.
- She
struggled with depression and suicidal ideation after the amputations
but went on to develop a new sense of style that centered on her golden
prosthetic legs.
- The experiences inspired Wasser to "dig deep
to see that beauty isn't just found in the physical, it's how we affect
others and the world."
- In recent times, Wasser has walked the
runway for Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana, and appeared in
fashion magazines such as Vogue and Elle.
- "I have always loved
gold, so I decided to make my legs a jewelry piece, to consciously make
something that people look at and are fascinated by. The result is, I
believe, something close to art," Wasser said.
